Venture Engine is an annual Entrepreneurship Program geared to provide a strong & viable platform for entrepreneurs to launch or expand their business. With direct access to potential investors and a focused program that incorporates mentoring & workshops from leading investors, industry experts & entrepreneurs, we aim to ensure that every business that comes through the program gains from the experience, regardless of funding.

With a focus on providing tangible benefits, Venture Engine strives to provide Sri Lankan entrepreneurs every opportunity required to launch their businesses; specifically through the development of stronger business plans aided by mentoring sessions and informative workshops with some of the region’s top entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Therein, these streamlined business ventures and their founders are given the opportunity to present their ideas before a panel of potential investors, affording them much valuable critique and insight into their pitch, and possibly even the capital and partners required to jumpstart their businesses.


Venture Engine offers each entrepreneur shortlisted from the main submissions, a host of benefits few in the business world would ever achieve in such a rapid succession. Most of which is crucial to every emerging business.

  • Open Call: The program usually launches in April/May with an open call for business plans. This is promoted for 4-6 weeks to allow enough time for submissions
  • Anyone with an idea for a business OR an existing business that they hope to grow is eligible to submit
  • Two Minute Pitch: All submitted plans are vetted by a panel of investors, and the best plans are called for a 2 minute pitch. There is no limit on the number of plans that can be called, any idea the panel sees potential in will be given a chance
  • Workshop Sessions: Following the two minute pitch the best plans move on to the workshop & mentoring sessions which are geared to prepare them for their next pitch while also developing their business plans.
  • Round 2: The entrepreneurs move onto the Round 2 presentations where they make a detailed pitch to the panel before the top businesses are short listed for the finale. There is no limit on the number of businesses that can make it through to the Finale.
  • Finale: During the finale the Top Selected Entrepreneurs’ make their final pitch to a panel of leading international & local investors followed by a Q&A session with the panel. Each plan is scored across a series of criteria, and the top 3 plans are awarded the main prizes.
  • Funding: Throughout this process and during the finale entrepreneurs are exposed to potential investors who are encouraged to fund the business of their choice regardless of the top the places that are awarded. Entrepreneurs have complete freedom in making their choices regarding funding.
